A Private Viewing, Reconsidered

Privacy should make an encounter more attentive, not more theatrical.

READING NOTE

A clear column, generous paragraph spacing, and no competing motion. The essay should feel quieter than the index.

A private viewing is most valuable when the work can be seen under more than one condition. We begin with even gallery light, then adjust the room so matte, glazed, and metallic passages can be read without distraction.

Scale is discussed in relation to the intended wall, not through a generic room mockup. Dimensions, hanging height, approach distance, and neighboring objects establish whether a painting will hold its place.

Documentation belongs in the same conversation. Condition notes, materials, framing, transport, and care should be available without interrupting the act of looking.

The aim is not pressure toward a decision. It is a precise encounter after which the visitor understands the work, the practical next steps, and what remains to be considered.
