The Useful Distance Between Paintings

The distance between two paintings is not leftover wall. It is the pause that lets comparison become deliberate.

READING NOTE

A clear column, generous paragraph spacing, and no competing motion. The essay should feel quieter than the index.

Hanging begins with individual works but quickly becomes relational. A dense botanical image placed beside a spare geometric abstraction can sharpen both, provided the interval between them is wide enough to hold the change in pace.

Equal spacing is useful for an archive and rarely sufficient for an exhibition. Scale, edge activity, dominant hue, and the implied direction of a composition all influence how much wall a work needs.

We test a sequence from the entrance, from the center of the room, and from the position at which a visitor is likely to turn. A successful hang offers several coherent routes rather than one mandatory reading.

The white wall remains visible as material: its light, texture, and proportion affect the field around every work. Restraint is not absence here. It is active structure.
